Links Of Gum Infections

The impact of oral disease can extend far beyond the mouth. Research has unveiled potential links between chronic gum infection and conditions as serious as diabetes, stroke, cancer, heart disease, and pregnancy complications. Not only might these ailments provoke oral health problems, but there's evidence that dental problems such as gum disease can contribute to bodily illness. Periodontal disease and decay are both caused by bacterial plaque. Plaque is a colorless film, which sticks to your teeth at the gum line. Plaque constantly forms on your teeth. If not carefully removed by daily brushing and flossing, plaque hardens into a rough, porous substance known as calculus (or tartar). By thorough daily brushing and flossing you can remove these bacteria and help prevent gum infections.
