Gum Infection Begins With Plaque Build Up
What is the meaning of dental plaque? Dental plaque is actually a soft deposit that forms on the teeth's surface. Dental plaque contains numerous types of bacteria or germs. Good oral hygiene can help removes plaque. Tartar or calculus refers to the hardened calcified plaque that firmly sticks to teeth. Dental plaque can only be removed by a dental hygienist with special instruments. Gum disease is a gum infection and inflammation of the gum tissues that surround the teeth. Gum disease is divided into two forms depending on then severity which is gingivitis and periodontitis. The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis which means the inflammation of the gums and in most cases are caused by plaque. If gingivitis becomes worse and progresses, periodontitis occurs and at this stage of gum disease that involves the tissue that joins the teeth to the gums.
